First Report of Dr. Watson

Dr. Watson describes in this chapter, the course of events using the separate letter he wrote to Sherlock Holmes.
In the first letter, he describes the appearance and character of the village and its inhabitants. He tells of the escaped convict on the moor and that there is evidence that he had left the area again.
He mentions in the letter that Sir Henry made the acquaintance of Miss Stapleton and fell in love with her.
Her brother, Mr. Stapleton, this seemed not to like, because he is very attached to his sister and he did not want to lose.
He writes from the fact that Doctor Mortimer him and the Stapleton showed how and where the incident of the death of the old man and stated that he saw something coming across the moor to him, so he ran away and died.
He wondered whether Barrymore knows more about the incident than he admits. He writes about strange observations he made at night, when he saw Mr. Barrymore sneaking around in the house.
